Box Score WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State junior Johnny Coy posted a
career-high five hits and team-leading three RBI in the Shockers' 10-3 win
against Kansas State Tuesday at Eck Stadium.
The non-conference win improved the Shockers' record to 5-0
against Big 12 competition this season in front of a season-high home crowd of 5,046
fans.
Coy finished the game hitting 5-for-5. Shocker Micah Green
went 3-for 4 and had two RBI. Jared King led Kansas State with three hits.
Coy's five hits marked the most in a game for a WSU player
since Taylor Brown hit five against Central Michigan Feb. 22, 2009. The Shockers combined for 17 hits Tuesday.
TJ McGreevy got the pitching win for Wichita State to improve to 2-2 this season, while Kansas State's Jared Moore (2-4) was credited with the loss.
Wichita State improved to 28-20 overall, while
Kansas State dropped a ninth-straight game to fall to 19-27 overall.
The Shockers got on the scoreboard first Tuesday in the
second inning. Green singled to right field to score Coy for
a 1-0 lead. Casey Gillaspie later scored an unearned run for a 2-0 lead when
Aaron Rea grounded into a double play.
Coy doubled down the left field line to
score Parker for a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Green's RBI single later scored
Coy to put Wichita State ahead, 4-0.
K-State ended the Shockers' shutout in
the fourth inning. Jon Davis' single to right center scored Jared King. The Wildcats
added two more runs in the fifth — one on Fisher's sacrifice fly in the fifth
inning and the other on King's single to left field to cut Wichita State's lead
to one run.
The Shockers quickly answered in the
sixth inning. Wichita State scored four runs with two outs in the sixth to open
up an 8-3 lead, including a two-run double by Coy. The Shockers then added two
additional runs in the sixth inning.
The Shockers next travel to Indiana State for a three-game
Missouri Valley Conference series starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 4. Wichita
State will then host Alcorn State May 9 at Eck Stadium.
