Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State baseball team came back
from one down in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Dallas Baptist, 8-7 on
Saturday at Eck Stadium.
Kris Gardner pitched 6.1 innings for the Shocks, allowing
three runs on three hits and striking out four in a no decision effort.
Johnny Coy went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, including
the game-winning hit.
The Patriots got on the board in the first inning on a
double by Joel Hutter that scored Austin Elkins and Landon Anderson.
The Shockers got their first run of the game in the third
inning on an RBI groundout by Erik Harbutz that scored Micah Green to cut the
Patriot lead to, 2-1.
Dallas Baptist added another in the fourth when KJ Alexander
singled to score Ryan Behmanesh and move their lead to 3-1.
Wichita State added a run of their own in the fourth. The
Shockers used another groundout to manufacture a run when Aaron Rea grounded out to
the second baseman to plate Johnny Coy, who had walked earlier in the inning.
The Shockers tied the game in the fifth. Micah Green tripled
to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on an Erik Harbutz
groundout.
Don Lambert led off the sixth for the Shockers with a double
down the right-field line, then, two batters later, Johnny Coy singled to plate
Lambert and give the Shockers their first lead of the game, 4-3.
Another leadoff hit would get the Shockers a run in the
seventh. Ryan Hege singled to leadoff the inning and scored later on a single
up the middle by Erik Harbutz.
The Shockers scored a run in the eighth on a Johnny Coy
single that scored Don Lambert to put the Shockers up, 6-3 going into the
ninth.
Dallas Baptist did not go away. Ryan Behmanesh doubled as
the second batter of the inning to get a base-runner for the Patriots. After
Duncan McAlpine walked, back-to-back singles by RJ Talamentes and Kenny Hatcher
scored Behmanesh and McAlpine to cut the Shocker lead to one. Then, Talamentes
scored on a groundout by Austin Elkins to tie the game at six. In the next
at-bat, Landon Anderson singled to score Jaime Garrido and give the Patriots
the lead, 7-6.
The Shockers would not give up in their half of the ninth.
Dayne Parker doubled to left-center to score Taylor Doggett who had reached
earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice. Then, after Don Lambert was
intentionally walked to load the bases, Johnny Coy singled to score Erik
Harbutz and win the game for Wichita State.
Wichita State will welcome the Patriots back to Eck Stadium
on Sunday at 1 p.m. for game three of the series.
