NORMAL, Ill.- The No. 62 Wichita State women's tennis team
extended their winning streak to nine matches, defeating Illinois State, 7-0,
on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Shocker women to 15-5 overall and 4-0
in the Missouri Valley Conference.
For the second match in a row, the Shockers were able to
play well in doubles, taking all three matches from the Redbirds. Delia
Damaschin and Lucia Kovalova defeated Aniko Kiss and Emmie Marx, 9-8, 7-0, and
Montse B. Fernandez and Veronika Blaskova defeated Hannah Esker and Stefanie
Youngberg, 9-8, 1-0, in two tightly contested matches to put the Shockers up,
1-0.
The Shockers continued their success in the singles
competition, winning all six contests. Carla Venticinque, the MVC Women's
Tennis Athlete of the Week, defeated Hannah Esker, 6-3, 6-2, to extend her
singles match winning streak to seven matches.
"Illinois State competed and played well defending their home courts," head coach Coling Foster said. "For us to come in here and win all three doubles and all six singles shows how well we are playing and, more importantly, competing across the board."
The Shockers are back in action on Sunday when they travel
to Peoria, Ill. for a conference match against Bradley. The match is scheduled
to start at 10 a.m.
