Box Score WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State freshman Casey Gillaspie drove
in four runs on two homeruns to lead the Shockers in a 10-7 win against
Southern Illinois Sunday at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers' come-from-behind win gave Wichita State a 2-1
edge in the three-game Missouri Valley Conference weekend series between the
teams.
Wichita State improved to 17-13 overall and 2-1 in
conference play. Southern Illinois dropped to 15-13 overall and 3-3 in the MVC.
Shocker pitcher Albert Minnis got the win to improve to 2-4
this season in front of a crowd of 2,751. Southern Illinois pitcher Sam Coonrod
(1-1) was credited with the loss.
Gillaspie's three hits and four RBI led all players and his three-run homerun
in the sixth inning gave the Shockers the lead for good. Taylor Doggett, Johnny
Coy and Aaron Rea each had two hits for Wichita State.
Southern Illinois grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first
inning. Chris Serritella's RBI single scored Jake Welch. Donny Duschinsky later
advanced to third on a fielding error by the Shockers' third baseman and
scored.
The Shockers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second
inning. Tyler Baker's two-RBI double through the right side scored Ryan Hege
and Aaron Rea. Baker later scored on a wild pitch.
The Salukis regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring
three runs. Two runs came on Rennie Troggio's single to right field. Duschinsky's
RBI double to left center later in the inning gave the Salukis a 5-3 edge.
Wichita State cut into the Salukis' lead in the fourth on
Taylor Doggett's RBI single and tied the game, 5-5, in the fifth. Baker
grounded out to the pitcher and Rea scored.
Gillaspie's three-run homerun to left field in the sixth
gave the Shockers an 8-5 edge.
Doggett scored when Coy flied out to right field and
Gillaspie's second homerun of the game pushed the Shockers ahead, 10-5, in the
eighth.
A two-run homerun by Southern Illinois' Austin Montgomery in
the top of the ninth inning cut Wichita State's lead to 10-7.
Sunday concluded a 20-game homestand for Wichita State. The
Shockers return to the road for the next five games. The Shockers play at
Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, then at Illinois State April 6-8
and at Kansas April 10.
