Box Score WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State senior Don Lambert scored on a
wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to grab a 4-3 win for
the Shockers against Southern Illinois Friday at Eck Stadium.
Lambert's run on an Erik Harbutz single in the eighth inning
tied the baseball game, 3-3, to force extra innings in Wichita State's Missouri
Valley Conference opener.
The Shockers improved to 16-13 overall and 1-0 in conference
play, while the visiting Salukis dropped to 14-12 overall and 2-2 in the MVC.
Wichita State pitcher Cale Elam (1-1) got the win, while
Southern Illinois' Aaron Snyder (1-2) was credited with the loss.
Harbutz, Dayne Parker, Micah Green and Tyler Coughenour
combined for the Shockers' four hits Friday in front of 3,011 fans.
Wichita State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the
second inning. Coughenour's single through the right side scored Casey
Gillaspie. Green later scored on a balk after he got on base with a double.
The Salukis cut into the Shockers' lead in the third inning.
John Menken's RBI double scored Brian Bejer. Menken later scored when Rennie
Troggio flied out to centerfield to tie the score, 2-2.
Chris Serritella's solo homerun to right field in the sixth
inning pushed the Salukis ahead, 3-2.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Lambert walked to
lead off the inning for Wichita State and later stole second. He advanced to
third base when Johnny Coy grounded out and scored on Snyder's wild pitch to
win the game.
Friday opened a three-game weekend series between the teams.
The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eck Stadium.
