Wichita State Falls to Long Beach State, 3-2, Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State closed out its three-game home baseball series against Long Beach State with a 3-2 loss Sunday at Eck Stadium.

Long Beach State scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning for the win. The Dirtbags won the weekend series, 2-1, and improved to 8-14 on the season.

The Shockers fell to 14-12 overall in front of a crowd of 2,821.

Shocker pitcher Cale Elam was credited with the loss (0-1) and Long Beach State's Jon Maciel (1-1) picked up the win on the mound. Dirtbag pitcher Kyle Friedrichs was credited with a save.

Sophomore Garrett Bayliff led the Shockers with 3-for-5 hitting.  Senior Kevin Hall and sophomore Dayne Parker each had a RBI for Wichita State.

Richard Prigatano led the Dirtbags with two hits Sunday.

Long Beach State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jeff McNeil scored when Juan Avila grounded out to third base.

The Shockers tied the game, 1-1, in the second inning. Johnny Coy scored when Parker flied out to right field.

Josh Halbert scored when Hall flied out to right field for a 2-1 Shocker lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Long Beach State tied the game and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Brennan Metzger's single scored Michael Hill. Metzger scored on a fielding error by WSU catcher Bob Arens when Brennan Fulkerson reached on a fielder's choice. The Dirtbags finished the half inning with three hits.

The game ended when Hall grounded into a double play in the bottom of the ninth for the final two outs.

The teams entered Sunday's game tied 1-1 in the three-game series. The Shockers scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to win the first game, 8-7. Long Beach State took game two, 13-1, Saturday.

The Shockers' homestand continues with a two-game series against South Alabama, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and continuing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eck Stadium.
