Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State baseball team scored runs
in each of the first four innings on their way to a 12-4 victory over Alcorn
State on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
Mitch Mormann got the win for the Shockers, pitching three
innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. He is now 3-2 on
the season.
Don Lambert went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. He was a
homerun away from hitting for the cycle. Aaron Rea went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Wichita State got on the board quickly in the bottom of the
first when Don Lambert and Johnny Coy scored on back-to-back walks to put the
Shockers up, 2-0.
The Braves answered with one run in the second inning when
Angel Rosa led off the inning with a triple, then scored on a fielder's choice
off the bat of Justin Perales.
The Shockers would add one run in the second, third and
fourth innings to push the score to 5-1.
Alcorn State came back with one run in each of the fifth and
sixth innings to put the score at 5-3.
In their half of the sixth, the Shockers would add three
more runs to answer the Braves yet again. After Josh Halbert walked to leadoff
the inning and Taylor Doggett singled, Kevin Hall singled to score Halbert.
Then, two batters later, Johnny Coy struck out swinging but reached base on a
wild pitch that scored Doggett. The last Shocker run of the inning would come
when Aaron Rea singled to center field to score Hall and put Wichita State up,
8-3.
Wichita State had another big inning in the seventh. The
first two runs were scored on wild pitches by Alcorn State pitcher Kevin
Gonzalez. Then, Casey Gillaspie doubled to left-center to score Don Lambert. In
the next at-bat, Aaron Rae singled to plate Gillaspie, and put the Shockers up
12-3.
The Braves plated one in the eighth inning to put the score
at 12-4.
The Shockers are back in action on Wednesday night against
Alcorn State at Eck Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
