Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawaii jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held
on to defeat Wichita State 6-3 in game one of a four-game series.
Johnny Coy and Don Lambert each had two hits for the
Shockers, while Kevin Hall drove in two.
Starter Josh Smith took the loss as he went 4.2 innings and gave up four
runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
Hawaii got on the board in the fourth inning. Zack Swasey tripled to right field with one
out and scored on a single up the middle by Pi'ikea Kitamura. After a wild pitch by Josh Smith advanced
Kitamura to second, Kaeo Aliviado singled to centerfield and Kitamura scored to
give UH a 2-0 lead.
Swasey hurt the Shockers again in the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on first and
second, Swasey doubled down the left field line to score two more and chase
Smith to give the Rainbows a 4-0 lead.
The Rainbows used four hits in the seventh inning to score
two more and take a 6-0 lead.
The Shockers opened the eighth inning with three-straight
singles from Johnny Coy, Casey Gillaspie and Don Lambert. A sac fly by Ryan Hege got the Shocks on the
board and a two-out single from Kevin Hall cut the lead to 6-3.
The Shockers and Rainbows meet in game two of the series on
Fri., March 2 at 10:35 p.m. Central time.
