Box Score WICHITA, Kan. — Johnny Coy hit 4-for-5, including two homeruns,
and batted in nine runs to lead Wichita State in a 16-1 win against North
Dakota Sunday at Eck Stadium.
Coy's nine RBI marked the most runs batted in for an
individual Shocker player since Drew Moffitt had 10 in a May 28, 2004 game
against Missouri State.
Sunday's win gave the Shockers a 4-0 series sweep of North
Dakota and improved Wichita State's record to 5-3 this season. North Dakota
fell to 0-4.
Kris Gardner (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for
Wichita State, allowing three hits and one run in five innings and striking out
two batters.
Wichita State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning. Kevin Hall scored when Erik Harbutz grounded out to second base.
Garrett Bayliff, who got on base on a single to left center, scored when Coy
grounded out to the shortstop.
North Dakota's Jeffrey Campbell doubled to right center to score
Kyle Bolander and cut the Shocker lead to one run in the top of the fourth
inning.
Coy's two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning
pushed the Shockers ahead, 4-1. The Shockers went on to add seven more runs in
the inning on Dayne Parker's two-RBI single, Hall's two-RBI single, Bayliff's
two-RBI single and Coy's RBI single. Wichita State led 11-1 after four innings.
Coy added a second two-run homerun in the seventh inning for
a 14-1 lead.
The Shockers improved to 69-0 at home all-time in the month
of February.
The Shockers next travel to Hawaii for a four-game series,
starting at 10:35 p.m. March 1. Wichita State then returns home for a 20-game
homestand, which opens at 6:30 p.m. March 6 against UT-Arlington.
