LINCOLN, Neb.- The Shocker women's tennis team split their
matches in Lincoln, Neb., losing to No. 27 Nebraska on Friday night and
defeating Colorado State on Saturday morning.
Wichita State lost all three doubles matches against the
Cornhuskers to go down 1-0 early.
In singles, Lutfiana Budiharto would give the Shockers their
only point on Friday by defeating No. 57 Mary Weatherholt, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0(8).
"For Lutfi it was a great win," said Head Coach Colin Foster. "She has lost
both of her previous meetings with Weatherholt and she played great tennis
after dropping the first set 6-0."
Sophomore Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul played a tough match, but
fell to No. 87 Janine Weinreich, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(6). The Shockers would drop the
rest their singles matchups to lose the match 6-1.
The Shockers would not let Friday affect their play on
Saturday though. They took it to Colorado State, defeating them 7-0.
The Shocks came out and won all three of their doubles
matches, to go up 1-0 for the match.
They took the same fierceness into singles play. Sophomore
Veronika Blaskova defeated Natalie Heffron, 5-7, 7-6(3), 10-7, and freshman
Lucia Kovalova defeated Kaley Schultz, 6-3, 7-6(5).
"We didn't play our best at every spot, but we found a way
to win every match," said Foster. "Vero and Lucy won several tiebreaks at the
end of the match and that was a great way to finish the match 7-0 for the team."
The Shocker women continue play on Sunday when they travel
to Omaha, Neb to play in their first conference match of the season against
Creighton. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
