WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State closed out the regular season with an 81-58 win against Drake
on Senior Night Saturday, then celebrated a Missouri Valley Conference
regular-season championship with a sold-out crowd of 10,506 at Charles Koch
Arena.
Shocker
seniors David Kyles, Joe Ragland, Toure' Murry, Ben Smith, Garrett Stutz and their
families were recognized prior their final men's basketball home game and before
pacing the No. 19 Shockers on the court.
Smith led
Wichita State with 18 points. Stutz added 15 points, while Murry scored 14
points and Kyles 13 points in the Shocker win. Kyles and Murry tied with a
game-high seven rebounds. Demetric Williams finished with 11 points for the
Shockers.
Wichita State
improved to 26-4 overall this season and 16-2 in Valley play.
The Shockers
won their eighth-straight game and finished 15-1 at home this season. The
Shockers also won for the 16th time in the last 17 games.
Drake fell to
16-14 and 9-9 in the MVC led by a game-high 21 points from Ben Simons, who made
seven three-pointers in the game.
The Shockers
blocked eight shots, including four by Ehimen Orukpe, and outscored the
visiting Bulldogs, 34-16, in the paint. Wichita State outrebounded Drake, 44-32,
as well.
The Shockers
jumped out to a 9-1 lead on a three-point play from Stutz and went ahead 12-1
on a trey from Smith at the 15:51 mark.
Drake's first
field goal of the afternoon came about 5:30 into the game on a three-pointer
from Simons. Simons later cut the Shockers' lead to 15-13 on a three-pointer
with about 12 minutes to go in the half. Simons scored 12 of the Bulldogs'
first 15 points.
Three-pointers
from Smith and Williams pushed Wichita State ahead, 25-15, as part of a 10-2
WSU run. Stutz free throws extended WSU to a 12-point edge.
Wichita State
led 36-25 at halftime. Stutz led the Shockers with 11 points in the half. Simons scored 15 points for Drake on
five three-pointers.
Smith's three-pointer
opened the second half to give WSU a 39-25 lead.
A Williams'
layup at the 13:17 mark of the second half gave WSU a 51-35 edge as part of a
6-0 run.
A layup and
three from Smith extended WSU to a 63-45 lead with 8:52 to play. The lead
stretched to 20 points on a layup by Tekele Cotton at the 8:11 mark as part of
a 7-0 run.
Wichita State
took a 27-point lead - the Shockers' largest of the game - on a Kyles layup
with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
The Shockers then
celebrated the MVC regular-season title they clinched earlier in the week by taking
turns cutting down the nets at Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State
next travels to St. Louis, Mo., as the No. 1 seed in the MVC Tournament. The
Shockers play at noon Friday, March 2 against the winner of Thursday's play-in
game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
