Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Middle
blockers Elizabeth Field and Ashley Andrade led Wichita State to a quarterfinal
sweep of host Missouri State with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The Shockers
won by scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-22.
Chelsey Feekin continued her stellar season with 36 assists
with senior Jackie Church chipping in with 10 digs.
In the first set Wichita State (21-8, 13-5) opened up play with a 4-1 run
keyed by a kill and subsequent service ace from Feekin. Missouri State (16-15, 10-8) fought
back to even the score, 9-9, on a kill by Christine McCartney. The set
continued to hang in the balance until the Shockers, trailing 18-17, went on a
4-1 run beginning with consecutive kills from Emily Adney and Ashlyn Driskill. The
scoring spree propelled the Shockers to the set victory, 25-22, capped by
Elizabeth Field's kill to end it. Andrade led the way for WSU, who hit .375 in the set as a
team, with four kills.
The Shockers carried the momentum into the second set
jumping out to an 8-1 lead forcing an early Missouri State timeout. The timeout
did little to halt the Shocker momentum as WSU continued to build their lead to
14-4 on a kill by Field. Missouri State closed the Shocker lead to 17-10 before
Andrade and Katie Reilly responded with consecutive kills to send the Shockers
on an 8-2 run to end the set. Field finished the set with five kills as the
Shockers outhit the Bears .324 to -.028.
Wichita State used another fast start to take an early lead
in the third set, 5-3, on a kill by Adney. The sixth-seeded Bears battled to
within two, 14-12, before Wichita State scored five of the next seven points to
take a 19-14 lead on a kill by Driskill. Missouri State answered back with a
7-1 run to get within one point, 21-20. Following a Wichita State timeout, the
Shockers reeled off four of the final six points of the set to complete the
sweep.
Wichita State advances to face Northern Iowa in tomorrow evening's
semi-finals at 7:30 p.m.
