WSU Advances to Title Game with 75-62 Win

CANCUN, Mexico -- Wichita State defeated DePaul, 75-62, behind 18 points from Demetric Williams in the Cancun Challenge at Moon Palace Resort to move into the title game against Iowa. 

 

The Shockers (5-0) also had Malcolm Armstead and Carl Hall score in double-figures with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

 

DePaul's Brandon Young had 19 points to lead the Blue Demons, while Moses Morgan and Cleveland Melvin backed him with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Young was only 4-of-14 from the field, but made 10-of-12 free throws.

 

WSU led the entire game with the largest margin at 13 points in the second half at the 6:11 mark. 

 

Wichita State out-shot the Blue Demons, 43.1 to 30.6 percent, despite both teams shooting less than 25 percent from the arc. 

 

The Shockers made only 15-of-26 free throws for 57.7 percent, while DePaul shot 38 free throws, but made 27 at a 71.1 percent clip in a game where there were more total fouls than points until 11:19 mark of the first half.

 

Both teams opened the first half scoreless for almost four minutes until the 16:09 mark when Tekele Cotton made a free throw on a two-shot foul to put WSU up 1-0. Cotton then made it 3-0 with a layup off a goal-tending call. 

 

DePaul held on for the last shot of the first half, a three-pointer by Worrel Clahar as WSU took a 27-22 lead into the half.

 

Near the end of the second half, a Moses Morgan three-pointer at the 3:43 mark cut WSU's lead to seven at 59-52 heading into the final media timeout.

 

A three-pointer by Williams, and four Shocker free throws made down the stretch helped WSU out-score the Blue Demons, 16-10, to fashion the final score.

 

In the late game, Iowa defeated Western Kentucky, 63-55, to advance to play the Shockers in the 8:30 p.m., final Wednesday night.
