JONESBORO, Ark. - The Wichita State women's basketball team picked
up their first victory of the season defeating Arkansas State, 60-51, Thursday
evening at the Convocation Center.
Jessica Diamond scored 20 and Jazimen Gordon added 13
points, seven rebounds and five steals to pace Wichita State (1-1, 0-0).
Jane Morrill led Arkansas State (0-3, 0-0) with 12 points
and six rebounds.
Following a narrow defeat to SEC power LSU on Sunday
afternoon in Baton Rouge, La., the Shockers used smothering defense and
Diamond's 10 first-half points to take control of the game. Wichita State
forced 13 turnovers in the half.
Diamond's layup at the 16:49 mark completed an 8-0 run for
WSU giving them a 15-5 lead.
The Shockers extended their lead to twelve coming out of the
halftime break, 35-23, on Jazimen Gordon's layup, but Arkansas State answered
back with an 11-2 run punctuated by Hanna Qedan's 3-pointer drawing the home
team to within three points, 37-34.
A Gordon two-point jumper with 3:21 left in the game would
stretch the lead to nine, and the Shockers would never be threatened the rest
of the game.
Wichita State will host UTSA on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Charles
Koch Arena. Tip off is set for 1:05 p.m.
