Shockers Trump Aces, 86-74, to Win Eighth-Straight Game

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. - Garrett Stutz scored 23 points in his return for Wichita State in a 86-74 win over Evansville on Wednesday night in front of 10,219 fans at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers have won eight in a row, and have now won 16-of-17.  Wichita State (18-3, 9-1) remains in a first place tie with Creighton in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The win was the 100th for Gregg Marshall at WSU, and he joins just three other coaches in history to win one hundred games at WSU.

Toure' Murry scored 14 points, while David Kyles and Carl Hall each added 12 points.  Stutz, who sat out the Southern Illinois game with a back injury, started for WSU on Wednesday, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Demetric Williams chipped in seven points and dished out a career-high ten assists.

Kenny Harris led Evansville (10-10, 5-5) in scoring with 19 points. Colt Ryan, who came into the game as the fifth leading scorer in the nation at 21.2 points per game, scored 17 points for the Purple Aces.

Murry's deep trey from the right wing with 42 seconds left in the half helped the Shockers take a 51-34 lead going into halftime.

The Aces had no answer for Stutz in the first half as he continually caught the ball and finished at the rim to help him score 15 points, going into eight-minute media timeout.

Evansville jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the game before Stutz and Murry helped the Shockers take the lead for good. Stutz made a layup and was fouled on the play. He knocked down the free throw to cut the lead to 6-3 and on the next procession threw down a dunk to get WSU within one point of the Aces, 6-5.  Williams knocked down a three pointer to give WSU a 11-10 lead at the 15:23 mark and WSU never trailed again in the game.

The Shockers shot lights out in the first half going 19-of-25 (73 percent) from the field, 4-of-6 (67 percent) from behind the arc and 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the free-throw line. WSU finished the game 29-of-46 (63 percent) from the field.

Murry, was the second leading scorer behind Stutz in the first half with 12 points. Kyles and Hall each scored seven in the half.

WSU will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Des Moines, Iowa, to face the Drake Bulldogs. This will be the first game this season against DU. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and can be seen on MVC-TV.
