WICHITA, Kan.- The
Wichita State Shockers fell to the Missouri State Bears, 3-0, in front of 2,363
fans at Charles Koch Arena Friday night.
With the loss, the Shockers fall to 8-5 on the season and
2-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action. Missouri State improves to 10-3 on
the year and 3-0 in the Valley.
Emily Adney and Ashley Andrade led WSU with nine kills
and Camri Zwiesler had eight. Mary Elizabeth Hooper led WSU with 30 assists and
Sarah Waldorf led the team with 12 digs.
Both teams rallied in the first set with back-and-forth
action, including lengthy rallies and constant lead changes throughout.
Missouri State took its largest lead of the set, 22-19, forcing Wichita State
into its second timeout. The Bears were able to remain in control for the
remainder of the set, as they went on to win the first set by a score of 25-23.
The attacks were even in the first set as Missouri State had
14 kills and Wichita State had 13. The action included 11 ties and five lead
changes. Both Zwiesler and Adney had three kills apiece for the
Shockers.
Missouri State claimed an early 10-5 lead over Wichita State
in the second set before a kill from Andrade silenced the run. Missouri State
was able to hang-on to the lead for the majority of the set as there
were only two ties and just one lead change. The Bears claimed a 22-15 lead over
WSU, before the Shockers scored four straight points to make it 22-19.
Back-to-back kills from Adney and Elizabth Field brought the Shockers closer, 21-23,
but it wasn't enough as the Bears went on to win the set 25-23.
Missouri State dominated most of the action in the set as
the Bears (21) had twice as many kills as the Shockers (10).
The Bears continued the momentum into the third set claiming
an 18-14 lead over the Shockers. Wichita State bounced back with consecutive
kills from Field and Sam Sanders to make it an 18-16 game. A service ace from
Adney brought WSU even closer, 18-19, and forced the Bears into taking a
timeout. A kill from Andrade evened the score at 20-20 as Charles Koch Arena
erupted. Wichita State claimed a late lead, 23-22, after a kill by Hooper and a
block-assist from Hooper and Zwiesler. Missouri State evened the score at 23-23
before Andrade picked-up a kill and brought the Shockers one point away from
winning the set. A service ace from MSU gave the Bears a 25-24 lead and a kill
sealed the win as the Bears took set three, 26-24, over the Shockers.
The Shockers hit the road as they continue Missouri Valley
action with a two-game road swing against Northern Iowa and Bradley. Wichita
State plays the Panthers of UNI on Fri., Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
