Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Creighton
used a five-run fifth inning to take a lead they never relinquished in a 7-5 win
against Wichita State Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference baseball game at
Eck Stadium.
Left
fielder Micah Green led the Shockers with two RBI and hit 2-for-3 for the
Shockers, who scored three of their runs in the first four innings.
Wichita
State fell to 8-6 in conference play and 29-22 overall. League-leader Creighton
improved to 32-11 overall and 10-4 in the Valley.
Chris
O'Brien and Johnny Coy also recorded two hits for Wichita State in the second
game of a three-game series with Creighton. Starting pitcher Brian Flynn (4-3) was
credited with the loss in front of a crowd of 4,096.
Alex
Staehely led the Bluejays with three RBI and hit 2-for-4. Creighton pitcher
Jonas Dufek (8-1) got the win, while Kurt Spomer was credited with the save.
Coy's
single to right field in the first inning scored Kevin Hall, who got on base
with a double, for an early 1-0 lead.
Creighton's
Jimmy Swift grounded into a Shocker double play (Tyler Coughenour to O'Brien to
Coy) for the first two outs of the third inning.
Creighton
tied the game in the fourth inning on a double to left center from Scott
Thornburg that scored Staehely. The Bluejays took a 2-1 lead when Chance Ross
struck out swinging and reached first on a wild pitch. Thornburg scored on the
play.
Green's
double to right center scored Coy to tie the game, 2-2, and the Shockers
regained the lead when Green scored on Walker Davidson's double to make the
score, 3-2.
Staehely's
three-run homerun to left field gave the Bluejays a 5-3 edge in the fifth
inning. Thornburg's double to right center scored Anthony Bemboom for a 6-3
Bluejays lead. Mike Gerber's double to left field scored Thornburg for the
Bluejays' fifth run of the inning for a 7-3 score.
Green
singled through the left side, scoring Coy and cutting Creighton's lead to 7-4
in the eighth inning.
Green's
leaping catch at the wall in left field closed the scoreless top of the ninth
inning for the Bluejays.
Preston
Springer's single scored Tyler Grimes, who got on base on a walk, to cut
Creighton's lead to two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the
Shockers were unable to complete the comeback.
The
three-game series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Eck Stadium.
