Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas used a four-run fifth inning to
defeat Wichita State 7-4.
Johnny Coy went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Chris O'Brien
went 2-for-5 and Tyler Grimes went 2-for-4.
Starter Zach Beringer took the loss.
He pitched four innings and allowed two runs on two hits.
Jimmy Waters walked to lead off the fourth and with one out
James Stanfield single through the left side.
After Beringer struck out Casey Lytle, Jake Marasco doubled to
right-center to give the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead.
The Jayhawks used four singles, a hit by pitch and a
sacrifice fly to add on four runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.
The Shockers got on the board in the sixth. Chris O'Brien led off with a single to
centerfield and after a double to right-center from Preston Springer, Johnny
Coy hit a grounder to short to score O'Brien and make the score 6-1. After a single from Tyler Coughenour and a
flyout, Micah Green singled to right field to cut the lead to 6-2.
KU added a run in the sixth and the Shockers answered with
two in the seventh. Tyler Grimes led off
with a walk and O'Brien reached on an error with one out. Springer walked to load the bases and Coy
singled to left field to score Grimes. A
sacrifice fly from Coughenour cut the lead to 7-4.
The Shockers and Jayhawks meet in Wichita on Wed., May 4 at
6:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
