Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Oral
Roberts scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to secure a
come-from-behind 8-7 win against Wichita State Tuesday at Eck Stadium.
The
Golden Eagles scored four runs on four hits and one error in the inning.
Designated hitter Chris Elder hit a single with Oral Roberts trailing by one
run. He reached second on a fielding error by Shocker Micah Green, while Joey
Winiecki and Brandon King (unearned) scored on the play for the 8-7 Oral
Roberts' edge.
The
Shockers (30-23) were unable to come back in the bottom of the ninth inning of
the non-conference baseball game after leading the majority of the night in
front of a crowd of 3,461.
Shocker
designated hitter Preston Springer finished the night hitting 3-for-5 and
picked up five RBI to lead Wichita State. Shocker pitcher Cale Elam was
credited with the loss.
Elder
picked up four hits and four RBI to lead the Golden Eagles (26-18) and pitcher
Joe Spring was credited with the win.
Springer's
three-run homerun in the first inning pushed the Shockers to an early 3-0 lead.
The homerun was Springer's team-leading eighth of the season and scored Kevin
Hall and Chris O'Brien.
Hall's
sacrifice fly with the bases loaded scored Green for a 4-0 lead in the second
inning.
Oral
Roberts' Nick Baligod hit a solo homerun to right field in third inning to cut
the Shockers' lead to three runs. Elder's three-run homerun in the third inning
tied the game, 4-4.
Don
Lambert reached on a fielder's choice and Springer scored to retake a 5-4 lead
in the third inning. Springer's
single through the right side scored Hall and Grimes in the sixth inning for a
7-4 edge.
Oral
Robert's Joey Winiecki hit a single in the top of the ninth inning to score
T.J. Bennett to bring the Golden Eagles to within two runs. Brandon King's
single, also with no outs on the scoreboard, scored Baligod to cut the score
to, 7-6, before the Elder single that helped push Oral Roberts into the lead.
Johnny
Coy and Tyler Coughenour struck out to start the bottom of the ninth for the
Shockers. Lambert walked and Green's ground out to second base ended the game.
The
Shockers, who are in the midst of a nine-game homestand, next host a three-game
series with Indiana State, starting with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday at Eck
Stadium.
