TULSA, Okla.- Tulsa's starting pitcher, Jordan Kinard, recorded 16 strikeouts as the Hurricanes swept the two-game series over Wichita State Wednesday evening in Tulsa, Okla.
The Shockers were held to just four hits as they dropped the second game of the doubleheader by the score of 5-0.
Junior Brittney Osborn led the Shockers' as she was 2-for-3 at the plate. Heather Gerritse and Sammie Shook picked up the other two hits of the game.
Defensively, Rachel Milnark recorded seven putouts and picked up an assist at second base.
Kinard improved to 7-4 on the season with the win in the circle for Tulsa. She went 6.0 innings and held the Shockers' scoreless on just four hits. She also recorded a career high 16 strikeouts.
Sloan Anderson got the start in the circle for the Shockers and fell to 2-5 on the season as she picked up the loss. Anderson went 3.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits.
The Hurricanes scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Kelly Chapman highlighted the inning for Tulsa as she hit a two-run home run over the fence in center-field.
Lacey Middlebrooks made it a 5-0 game for Tulsa as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hurricanes would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game.
The Shockers return to Missouri Valley Conference play as they welcome the Drake Bulldogs to Wilkins Stadium for a three-game series this weekend. Wichita State and Drake will kick-off the series with a double-header on Sat., April 9 starting at 12:00 p.m.
Shockers Drop Game One, 4-1, to Hurricanes
TULSA, Okla.- The Wichita State softball team fell to Tulsa, 4-1, in the first game of a doubleheader in Tulsa, Okla. Wednesday afternoon.
Errors plagued the Shocker defense as Tulsa was able to score four runs on 10 hits and three errors.
Tulsa held Wichita State to just five hits on the game. Jamie Hull led the Shocks as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored the only run of the game for WSU. Hayley Temple, Rachel Milnark, and Brittney Osborn all picked up one hit in the game.
Brianna Smet got the start in the circle for Wichita State and fell to 3-10 on the season with the loss. She went 4.0 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. Sloan Anderson came into the game from the bullpen and went 2.0 innings and gave up just one run on three hits. She also recorded two strikeouts.
Lacey Middlebrooks improved to 8-4 on the season as she picked up the win in the circle for Tulsa.
Tulsa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after scoring one run off of two hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning. The bases were loaded with no outs when Skylar Swanson hit into a fielder's choice at second base that allowed Caitlin Everett to score. Swanson was called out at the end of the play for abandoning first base. Smet was able to get out of the inning by forcing a groundout to second.
The Golden Hurricanes made it a 2-0 game after two innings of play by scoring one run off of one hit and two errors in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back errors on the Shockers to start the bottom of the inning allowed Lauren Menke to score and make it a 2-0 game in favor of Tulsa.
The Shockers loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, but Tulsa was able to get out of the inning without any harm done.
Tulsa loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning with no outs. Smet was able to get the first out of the inning by forcing a batter to fly out to right-field. Kelly Chapman then hit a sacrifice fly out to right which scored Aimee Creger. The Shockers were able to get out of the inning on the same play as Heather Gerritse caught Lauren Menke trying to advance to third base.
Wichita State made it a 3-1 game by scoring one run off of two hits and one error in the top of the sixth inning. Hull led things off for the Shockers with a single down the left-field line. Heather Gerritse moved her over to second before Hayley Temple drove her home with a single out to left-field.
Tulsa answered the run and made the score 4-1 with a lead-off solo home run from Creger in the bottom of the inning. They were able to hold onto that lead for the remainder of the game.
