Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State Shockers scored 14 runs in the bottom of
the fifth inning to take control of an eventual 20-4 win against Alcorn State
Wednesday at Eck Stadium.
Freshman infielder Dayne Parker hit 3-for-5, picked up six
RBI and hit two doubles to pace the Shockers. Parker's three hits, six RBI and
two doubles all set new career marks for the player from Roff, Okla.
Junior catcher Chris O'Brien also picked up three hits for
Wichita State (20-11). Kevin Hall and Don Lambert each had three RBI. Johnny
Coy hit a solo homerun in the second inning in front of a crowd of 2,985.
Freshman Albert Minnis picked up his first win on his first
start on the mound for the Shockers and struck out five batters in five innings
while allowing five hits. Alcorn State pitcher Terrance Stubbs was credited with
the loss.
Alcorn State (10-18) took an early 3-0 edge in the game and
held the lead until the Shockers' offense exploded in the fifth inning.
The 14-run fifth inning marked the most runs scored by a
Shocker baseball team in an inning since scoring 13 in the ninth inning against
Hawaii-Hilo Feb. 17, 2003. The Shockers also scored their highest run total in a game
since posting 22 runs against Kansas April 27, 2010.
Alcorn State took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the first
inning. Alvin Jackson doubled to right center, scoring Antoin Morales. Jackson
scored on an Eduardo Gonzalez single. Gonzalez later scored on Angel Rosa's
double to right field.
Johnny Coy hit a solo homerun to right field in the bottom
of the second inning to cut the Braves' lead to two runs.
Parker walked with two outs in the fourth inning to load the
bases for the Shockers. Walker Davidson was then hit by a pitch from Stubbs,
which scored Coy and cut the Braves' lead to one.
The Shockers took a 16-3 lead with a 14-run fifth inning.
Coy's single through the left side loaded the bases for the Shockers. Lambert's
single to right scored Preston Springer and O'Brien to give Wichita State its
first lead of the night, 4-3. Parker's double to left field scored Coy and
Lambert. Ryan Hege then scored on a throwing error by third baseman Morales.
Hall's three-RBI double to left field scored Grimes,
Davidson and Parker for a 10-3 edge later in the inning. O'Brien's single
scored Hall with one out on the scoreboard. Hege was hit by a pitch with two
outs to score O'Brien for a 12-3 lead. Hege advanced to second on a passed ball,
advancing Lambert to third and scoring Coy. Parker's double to left field scored
Hege and Lambert for a 15-3 lead. Davidson reached on a throwing error and
advanced to second. Parker, who finished the inning with four RBI, scored on
the play.
Lambert walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning,
pushing Micah Green home for a 17-3 edge. Parker's single with two outs scored Coy
and Springer.
Tyler Coughenour scored on a Springer double for the
Shockers' 20th run. Alcorn State added its fourth run in the eighth
inning.
Wednesday's win closed out a two-game series between the teams.
The Shockers won the first game, 14-11, Tuesday.
The
Shockers next play a three-game weekend series against Missouri State in
Springfield, Mo. The series kicks off with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday, followed by
a 2 p.m. Saturday game and 1 p.m. Sunday game.
