Box Score 2 CARBONDALE, Ill. - Wichita State split a doubleheader with
Southern Illinois to improve to 28-19 overall and 7-5 in the Missouri Valley
Conference. SIU won the first game 4-3 and
the Shockers won game two 11-5.
Game 1
Southern Illinois used a complete game from Cody Forsythe to
win a pitcher's duel 4-3 in game two of a three-game series.
Forsythe allowed just three runs on five hits with five
strikeouts. Brian Flynn also threw a
complete game. He went eight innings and
allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Walker Davidson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Tyler
Coughenour went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Salukis got on the board in the fourth. With one out, Brian Flynn walked Brock
Harding and Jordan Sivertsen and they advanced to second and third on a
groundout by Nick Johnson. Blake Pinnon
then singled to centerfield to score both and give the Salukis a 2-0 lead.
Tyler Coughenour led off the fifth with a single and after a
flyout stole second base. He moved to
third on a groundout by Micah Green and scored on a infield single from Walker
Davidson to cut the lead to 2-1.
Harding singled with one out in the eighth and moved to
third on a double from Sivertsen. A
single by Johnson scored both to increase the lead to 4-1.
Chris O'Brien led off the ninth with a double to left field
and Johnny Coy was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no
outs. After a Springer lineout and a
Saluki error put the runners at second and third, Coughenour and Lambert drove
in runs with fielder's choices before a groundout ended the game.
Game 2
Micah Green drove in a career-high seven runs as the
Shockers won game two of a doubleheader with SIU 11-5.
Green went 2-for-3 with a home run. Walker Davidson went 3-for-5 with two
RBI. Reliever Aaron LaBrie earned the
win. He went 3.1 shutout innings and
allowed just one hit.
Johnny Coy and Preston Springer led off the second with
back-to-back singles and Tyler Coughenour bunted them over to second and
third. After a four-pitch walk to Don
Lambert, Micah Green homered to left-center for his first career home run, a
grand slam, to give the Shocks a 4-0 lead.
Coughenour doubled to leadoff the fourth and moved to third
after Lambert reached on an error. Green
then hit a ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to score Coughenour to put
the Shocks in front 5-0.
The Salukis answered with three runs in the bottom of the
fourth. SIU used two hits, two walks,
two Shocker errors and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Shockers used three walks and four singles to score five
more in the fifth and take a 10-3 advantage.
WSU added a run in the seventh and SIU scored two in the
eighth to make the score 11-5.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., May 3 when they
travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Kansas at 6 p.m.
