Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill. - Wichita State pounded out nine runs and
17 hits to win game one against Southern Illinois 9-6.
Tyler Grimes went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Kevin Hall and
Chris O'Brien each drove in three.
Johnny Coy and Don Lambert added three hits as well.
Starter Charlie Lowell earned the win. He went 6.1 innings and allowed two earned
runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Cale
Elam picked up his fourth save of the season as he recorded the last two outs
of the game.
Tyler Coughenour led off the second inning with a triple to
right-center and scored on a single up the middle from Don Lambert. Micah Green bunted him to second and then a
Saluki error put runners at first and third with one out. Another Saluki error and a fielder's choice
scored another run and then a double by Chris O'Brien put the Shocks in front
3-0.
The Salukis took the lead with four runs in the second. After a Shocker error and a hit by Blake
Pinnon, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Dustin Huff doubled to right field to score
both runs and then Chris Murphy singled to centerfield to score Huff and tie
the game and Murphy came around to score on another Shocker error to take a 4-3
lead.
The Shockers retook the lead with three runs in the
fourth. Walker Davidson, Tyler Grimes,
Kevin Hall and O'Brien led off the inning with four-straight singles to score
the three runs and give WSU a 6-4 lead.
In the seventh inning, Don Lambert and Micah Green led off
with infield singles. Davidson bunted
them over and Grimes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. An infield single from Hall scored Lambert and
a sacrifice fly from O'Brien gave WSU an 8-4 lead.
SIU answered with a couple of runs in the seventh. Huff doubled with one out and after a single
by Murphy and a walk, Austin Montgomery singled with the bases loaded to drive
in two and cut the lead to 8-6. TJ
McGreevy then got Jordan Sivertsen to ground into a double play to end the
inning.
The Shockers added on a run in the eighth. Lambert singled through the right side with
two outs to score Coughenour who reached on a fielders choice and stole second
base.
The Shockers and Salukis will finish the series with a
doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Sat., April 30.
