Jayhawks Take Two from Shocks

WICHITA, Kan.- Kansas scored four runs in the fifth inning to come-from-behind and beat Wichita State, 6-3, in the second game of the doubleheader at Wilkins Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Jayhawks claimed their first lead of the game in the fifth inning and never looked back. The series sweep of the Shockers' makes it seven wins of the last eight meetings between the two teams.

The Shockers bounced back after losing the first game of the doubleheader by taking an early 3-0 lead after three innings of play in the second game. The Shocks just couldn't recover after losing the lead in the fifth.

Jamie Hull led the Shockers' offense in both games of the doubleheader. She went 2-for-3, picked up two RBI, and scored a run in the second game. She was 4-for-5 on the day. Both Hayley Temple and Holly Eckert went 2-for-3 at the plate. Temple picked up one RBI.

Kiesten Dixon went 1-for-3 and scored two runs in the second game.

Brianna Smet got the start in the circle for the Shockers and fell to 4-13 on the season with the loss. She went 4.1 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. Katie Armagost went 2.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts.

Alex Jones picked up the win in the circle for Kansas. She improved to 6-2 on the season by going 5.0 innings and holding the Shockers scoreless on three hits.

With the loss, Wichita State falls to 16-33 on the season. Kansas improves to 31-20 on the year.

The Shockers started off the second game just like the first by scoring a run to take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Kiersten Dixon and Jamie Hull allowed Hayley Temple to pick up the RBI in the inning. Temple scored Dixon with a single to the left side.

Wichita State made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the third inning by scoring two runs on one hit. Dixon led off the inning by drawing a walk, and then Jamie Hull hit a two-run home run over the fence in right-field. It was Hull's seventh home run of the season and 23rd of her career. Hull is one home run away from moving into fourth place all-time.

Smet held the Jayhawks scoreless on three hits through the first three innings. KU broke through and was able to get one run back in the top of the fourth inning. They did some damage in the top of the fifth inning as they scored four runs on three hits and one error. KU made it three consecutive innings of runs when they scored one run on one hit and one error in the top of the sixth inning. The run gave them a 6-3 lead over the Shockers.

WSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning with no outs, but Kansas was able to get out of the inning without giving up any runs.

The Shockers return to Missouri Valley Conference action as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a three-game series with Northern Iowa. The two teams meet for a doubleheader on Sat., April 30 at 12:00 p.m. They will wrap up the three-game set on Sun., May 1 at 12:00 p.m.

 


 

Shockers Drop Game One to Jayhawks

WICHITA, Kan.- In-state rival Kansas hit five home runs and two Jayhawks hit two each as KU took the first game of the doubleheader from the Shockers at Wilkins Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Jayhawks won the game 11-3 in six innings by scoring 11 runs on 11 hits.  Kansas has now won six of the last seven games against the Shockers.

Wichita State picked up eight hits in the game, but stranded six runners. Jamie Hull led the Shockers' as she was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored. Heather Gerritse went 1-for-2 and picked up an RBI. Hayley Temple picked up the other Shocker' RBI as she was 1-for-3.

Liz Kocon and Mariah Montgomery led the Jayhawk offense. They each hit two home runs in the game.

With the loss, Wichita State falls to 16-32 on the season. Kansas improves to 30-20 on the year.

The Shockers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring one run on three hits. WSU loaded the bases with a fielder's choice from Kiersten Dixon and back-to-back base hits from Jamie Hull and Heather Gerritse. Kansas got Dixon out at home with a force out on a groundball from Hayley Temple to get the second out of the inning. Hull capitalized on a Kansas mistake as she was able to advance home on a wild pitch to make it a 1-0 game.

Kansas answered the Shocker run and added a few more in the top of the second inning. KU made it a 3-1 game by scoring three runs on three hits and one error in the inning. The Jayhawk inning was highlighted by a solo home run from Liz Kocon.

KU extended its lead out to 6-1 in the top of the third inning by scoring three runs on three hits and one error. Kocon hit her second home run of the game in the inning, which was a three-run shot over the fence in right-field.

The Jayhawks made it an 8-1 game by scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Mariah Montgomery hit KU's third home run of the game in the inning.

The Shockers scored two runs on two hits and one errror in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it an 8-3 game. Wichita State loaded the bases for Gerritse who picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly out to right-field. Danika Miller scored on the play. Temple picked up the other RBI in the inning by scoring Dixon with a single back up the middle.

Kansas hit its fourth home run of the game to make it a 9-3 score in favor of KU in the top of the sixth inning. The home run was Montgomery's second of the game. Marissa Ingle joined the home run action as she hit a two-run home run to make it an 11-3 game for the Jayhawks.
