WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State softball team extended its winning streak out to four games as the Shockers upset #18 Oklahoma State, 4-2, in front of 266 fans at Wilkins Stadium Tuesday evening.
In their first night game of the season, the Shockers never trailed to nationally ranked Oklahoma State. The Shockers lost to the Cowgirls earlier in the season, 10-1, but came out and took it to OSU from the start of the game. Wichita State scored four runs on nine hits and held the Cowgirls to just two runs on five hits.
Wichita State improved to 14-28 on the season as #18 Oklahoma State fell to 34-11 on the year.
Freshman Sloan Anderson picked up her fifth win of the season as she held Oklahoma State to two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of action. Senior Brianna Smet picked up her second save of the season. All three pitchers saw action in the game.
Hayley Temple led the Shockers' offensive attack. She went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Freshman Erin Carney was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored. Kiersten Dixon, Jamie Hull, Heather Gerritse, Sammie Shook, and Brittney Osborn each picked up one hit in the contest. Both Rachel Milnark and Shook picked up an RBI.
Both teams left runners stranded to start the game. Oklahoma State loaded the bases with just one out in the first inning, but Katie Armagost was able to get out of the inning as she forced two Cowgirls to pop up to Rachel Milnark at second base. Wichita State left runners on first and third in the bottom of the inning after picking up two early first inning hits.
The Cowgirls pitched their way out of a multiple runner jam for the second consecutive inning in the bottom of the second. The Shockers' loaded the bases with just one out in the inning on one hit and two walks. Danika Miller hit into a fielder's choice as OSU got Sammie Shook out at home for the second out of the inning. Morgan Hawkins got herself out of the jam as she forced Kiersten Dixon to ground out to short. The Shockers left five runners stranded through the first two innings of action.
The Shockers put runners in scoring position for three consecutive innings. They finally capitalized on it in the bottom of the third inning and reached the scoreboard first by taking a 1-0 lead. Hayley Temple hit her 11th double of the season with a hard hit ball off the wall in right field. Sammie Shook then picked up the RBI for the Shockers as she singled down the left-field line to score Temple and put WSU ahead 1-0.
The Cowgirls loaded the bases in the first inning, but Armagost went on to retire eight straight batters through three innings of play. Sloan Anderson took over in the fourth inning as she came out of the bullpen. OSU tied the game, 1-1, by a scoring one run on two hits in the inning. Julie Ward hit her 10th double of the season before Tamara Brown singled up the middle to bring her across the plate.
Wichita State reclaimed the lead, 2-1, by scoring a run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Erin Carney led off the inning for the Shockers with a double down the right-field line. The hit literally went right over first base and shot down to the corner in right field. Brittney Osborn moved Carney over to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Dixon picked up her 18th RBI of the season scoring Carney with a single to the right side.
The Shockers scored two runs on two hits and one error to inch away with a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Temple picked up her second hit of the game with a single to the left side of the infield. She moved to second as Shook reached on a fielder's choice. Milnark hit into a fielder's choice as the Cowgirls got Shook out at second base. Heads up running from Temple allowed her to go all the way from second to home as OSU tried to get Milnark out in a double play. Carney kept the inning going by scoring Milnark with a single out to right field. The Shockers claimed a 4-1 lead at the end of the inning.
Oklahoma State shortened the gap, 4-2, with a solo home run from Chelsea Garcia in the top of the sixth inning.
Brianna Smet came into the game in the top of the seventh inning to close out the win for the Shockers. Wichita State went on to beat #18 Oklahoma State, 4-2.
The Shockers return to action Wednesday evening as they welcome the Missouri State Bears to Wilkins Stadium for a doubleheader. The action will begin at 3:00 p.m.
