WICHITA - Wichita State shut out the Illinois State
Redbirds, 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The win improved the Shockers record to
11-8 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Missouri Valley.
Veronika Blaskova and Montse Blasco Fernandez clinched the
doubles point for the Shocks with their 8-4 win against Aniko Kiss and Phyllis
Tigges in the No. 1 match.
Lutfiana Budiharto and Raphaela Zotter worked quickly in their 8-2
defeat of Ariane Mack and Hannah Esker in the No. 2 match for the Shockers
first doubles win. Doubles closed
with a thrilling match between Carla Venticinque and Delia Damaschin of WSU and
Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet of ISU. The Shocks won the match 8-7(1).
The Shockers won four of the six singles in two sets and in
the No. 2 and No. 6 matches, Illinois State battled taking WSU to three sets in
each but the Shockers won both.
"Very proud of the fight today from the girls, Raphaela and
Montse were both down a set and it was clear the team had the match in hand and
they pushed themselves to find a way to win even without their best tennis
today," head coach Colin Foster said.
WSU will close out the regular season next weekend on the
road with matches against Drake and UNI on Saturday and Sunday. Check here for all results as they
