Box Score WICHITA- Wichita State (22-16, 2-3) used lots of hits and a
great pitching performance by Charlie Lowell to defeat the Evansville Aces
(19-13, 1-4), 11-1 Saturday afternoon in front of 3,326 fans at Eck Stadium.
Lowell tossed eight solid innings and allowed one unearned
run with eight strikeouts and only one walk to improve to 6-4 this season. Cole Eshom (3-4) took the loss for the
Aces allowing six runs on twelve hits in 4.2 innings.
Preston Springer went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI
and Tyler Grimes also went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI for the
Shockers. Johnny Coy was also
3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Wichita State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning. Kevin Hall was hit by a
pitch and Coy singled up the middle and both would score on Preston Springer's
double.
The Shockers played great team ball with one out in the
third after a Walker Davidson single and a Micah Green walk, Tyler Grimes
executed a perfect hit and run to score Davidson easily from second to push the
lead to 3-0.
Evansville scored their only run of the game in the fourth
inning after Tyler Copeland doubled with one out. He advanced on a groundout by Nate Smith and came around to
score on a passed ball to make the score 3-1.
Hall helped the Shockers get the run back the next inning and
make it 4-1, Wichita State with his RBI single to plate Grimes who had doubled
to left center with two outs.
A Tyler Coughenour double, a walk to Don Lambert and
back-to-back singles by Micah Green and Grimes helped the Shocks add two runs
and push their lead to 6-1 in the fifth.
O'Brien blasted his second home run in two days to add
another run to make it 7-1 in the sixth.
Wichita State added another four runs in the eighth including
Springer's three-run shot over the right field wall. The Shocks added one more to run rule the Aces, 11-1.
The final game of the series will be played on Sunday at
1:00 p.m.
