Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii - Chris O'Brien drove in five runs and Josh
Smith threw seven shutout innings as Wichita State beat Hawaii 6-2 in game two
of a four-game series.
Smith (4-1) allowed just four singles with one walk and tied
his career-high with seven strikeouts.
O'Brien went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a sacrifice
fly. He tied his career-high with the
five RBI. Reliever Aaron LaBrie earned
his first career save by getting a strikeout with the bases loaded in the
ninth.
The Shockers collected three hits in the first, but scored
just one run. Tyler Grimes and Kevin
Hall led off with singles, but Preston Springer grounded into a double play to
just leave Grimes at third. Chris O'Brien
then doubled to left field to give the Shocks a 1-0 lead.
WSU tacked on another run in the third. Hall led off with a double, advanced to third
on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by O'Brien to put the Shocks in
front 2-0.
The Shockers put up four runs in the eighth to take a 6-0
lead. Micah Green and Grimes led off
with singles and after a sacrifice bunt by Hall, the Rainbows intentionally walked
Springer. O'Brien then doubled off the
left field wall to clear the bases.
Dayne Parker then followed with a single up the middle to give the
Shocks a 6-0 lead.
The Rainbows scored two in the ninth with three singles to
make the final 6-2.
The Shockers and Rainbows play game three of the series at
11:35 p.m. (CST) on Fri., April 1.
