- The Wichita State Shockers (6-7, 1-0) dropped
a hard fought match to the No. 45 Kansas State Wildcats (9-1), 4-3 on Sunday at
Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson.
The Shockers fought hard in the doubles matches but couldn't
capture the point, Delia Damaschin and Raphaela Zotter won the No. 2 match,
8-6. Freshmen Veronika Blaskova and
Carla Venticinque battled back from a 7-3 deficit in the No. 1 match but fell
to Karla Bonacic and Antea Huljev, 8-5.
In singles action the Wildcats took the first three singles
matches in order to win the match. No.
123 Petra Niedermayerova knocked off Budiharto, 6-0, 7-6(3) in the No. 1 match
and Karla Bonacic defeated Blaskova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. Shockers freshman Venticinque battled back
from a 1-0 deficit in the No. 3 match to force a third set but dropped the
match to Antea Huljev, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
Zotter won her match 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 over Petra Chudra and
Damaschin knocked off Ana Gomez, 6-2, 6-4.
Montse Blasco Fernandez won her match against Sarah Snoodgrass, 6-3,
6-1.
"It was disappointing to come up just short today but we did
a good job to put ourselves to win on every court," head coach Colin Foster
said. "If we keep playing with this
fight and determination good things will happen."
Next action for the Shockers will be March 25-26 when they
take on Rice and Tulane in Houston,
Texas.
