Box Score ST. LOUIS - Myles Walker scored a career-high 14 points to lead No. 3-seeded
Indiana State (19-13) to a 61-54 win over second-seeded Wichita State (25-7) in
the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday.
J.T.
Durley led the Shockers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. David Kyles added 10 points for the
Shockers off the bench.
Jake
Odum scored 12 points for Indiana State including a perfect 6-for-6 from the
free throw line.
Wichita State
led 27-22 at halftime and held a 30-22 lead early in the second half after a
Durley three-point play but cold shooting from WSU helped Indiana State answer
with an 18-1 run over nearly seven minutes to take a 40-31 lead.
WSU responded
with a 7-0 run after Gabe Blair made a layup to cut the Sycamores lead to
40-38. After Odum hit two free
throws to push the Indiana State lead to 42-38, Durley hit a layup and Ben
Smith hit one of two free throws for the Shockers to get within one,
42-41. It would be the closet to
the lead for the Shockers the rest of the game as they couldn't overcome good
shooting by the Sycamores.
Walker and
Jordan Printy helped the Sycamores go on a 13-2 lead with four points and six
points, respectively to push their lead to 55-43. Wichita State would not give up easily as they battled back
to cut the Indiana State lead to 57-54 after Kyles buried a three pointer. The Shockers ran out of gas though and
missed their last three three-point attempts and Indiana State went 4-for-4
from the free throw line in the final seconds to get their first victory of the
season over Wichita State.
The
Sycamores used a 33-13 run in the second half to erase a 30-22 deficit. Wichita State outrebounded Indiana
State on the boards, 36-32 including 11 offensive boards to the Sycamores
eight.
Turnovers
were a concern for both teams as Wichita State committed 15 and Indiana State
13 in the game.
