EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Haleigh Lankster poured in 21 points and
the Wichita State women's basketball team closed the 2010-11 regulars season
with a 65-50 victory at Evansville. It
was the final game at Roberts Stadium.
The victory gives WSU its highest 2-year win total in more
than a decade and the third-highest 2-year win total in program history
(34). The Shocks also collected 10 MVC
wins for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign and turned in a 5-game
conference winning streak for the first time since 2002-03.
The Shockers started quickly, leaping out to a 10-3
advantage, with Lankster providing five points and Chynna Turner the other
five. Turner finished with 13 points and
eight rebounds. Michelle Price also
reached double digits with 10 points.
Evansville closed to within 19-17 at the 7:34 mark in the
first half but WSU answered and led by five at halftime. A 7-2 spurt early in the second half gave the
Shockers a 43-32 lead and Evansville never came closer than seven points after
that.
Wichita State finishes the regular season with a 16-13
record for the second consecutive year.
The team's 10-8 MVC record is its best since going 14-4 in 1999-00. The Shockers also won in Evansville for the
first time since 2002 and claimed a 5-game winning streak in Valley games for
the first time since 2002-03.
The Shockers will be the No. 5 seed in next
week's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Charles, Mo. and will play
Friday at 2:35 p.m.
