Denton, Texas- Nine different Shockers recorded a hit as Wichita State beat UTEP, 11-3, in the second game of the Courtyard Classic hosted by North Texas.
WSU scored at least one run in all six of the innings before the game was called in the bottom of the sixth because of the mercy rule. The second win of the day improved Wichita State to 6-11 on the season and the Miners fell to 9-7on the year.
A balanced effort led to the Shockers' victory as nine different Shockers picked up at least one hit, eight recorded at least one RBI, and eight scored at least one run. Four different Shocks had multiple hits as Hayley Temple led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, one double, and one run scored.
Jamie Hull was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with one home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Heather Gerritse was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Erin Carney and Danika Miller rounded out the multiple hits as they both went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Senior Brianna Smet improved to 2-5 on the season picking up the win in the circle. She went 3.2 innings giving up no runs and only one hit. She recorded three strikeouts.
The Miners got on the scoreboard first as they scored one
run in the top of the first inning with a home run from Chelsea Troupe over the
fence in center field.
The Shockers answered right back scoring one run off of two
hits in the bottom of the inning. Hayley Temple led off the inning with a
double down the right field line. Jamie Hull moved her over to third with a
base hit up the middle. Temple made the
score 1-1 as Heather Gerritse brought her home on a sacrifice fly to left
field.
Sammie Shook hit her second home run of the season and fifth
of her career to make the score 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The
Shockers went on to score another run in the inning. Meghan Boston walked and
then Rachel Milnark moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Kiersten Dixon
drove Boston home with a single to left field to make the score 3-1 in favor of
WSU.
UTEP evened the score at 3-3 scoring two runs off of two
hits and one error in the top of the third inning. The Shockers responded as
they kept their bats going by putting runs on the scoreboard for the third
consecutive inning. Jamie Hull drew a walk to start the inning off for WSU.
Gerritse then picked up her second RBI of the game scoring Hull with a double
to left center. Torrie Brown came in to pinch run for Gerritse and scored off
of an Erin Carney single to right field. Wichita State took a 5-3 lead when it
was all said and done with two runs scored off of three hits in the bottom of
the inning.
The Shockers made it four consecutive innings with at least
one run scored as Temple hit a double up the middle to score Danika Miller and
extend the lead out to 6-3. They kept the good fortune going in the bottom of
the fifth inning as Rachel Milnark doubled and picked up an RBI scoring Shook
to make the score 7-3.
Wichita State made it six innings with at least one run scored as Jamie Hull hit a two run home run over the fence in center field to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Shockers. It was her third home run on the season and 19th of her career. The Shockers went on to score two more runs in the inning to make it an 11-3 final.
Wichita State returns to action Saturday afternoon as they
take on UT-Arlington at 10:00 a.m. in the second day of the Courtyard Classic
hosted by North Texas.
Shockers Drop the Rebels, 3-2
DENTON, Texas- Seniors Jamie Hull and Heather Gerritse both went 2-for-2 as the Shockers beat Ole Miss, 3-2, in the first game of the Courtyard Classic hosted by North Texas.
Hull finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate picking up one RBI and scoring one run. Freshman Erin Carney went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Senior Kiersten Dixon scored two runs and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Meghan Boston picked up the Shockers' eighth hit of the game with one double.
Sophomore Katie Armagost got the start in the circle for the Shockers.
She went 5.2 innings and only gave up two hits on the game. Two runs were scored, but none of them were earned. Armagost improves to 4-4 on the season with the win.
Freshman Sloan Anderson picked up her second save of the season as she came into the game in the sixth.
Wichita State took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Shockers had runners on first and second with one out after both Kiersten Dixon and Jamie Hull walked. Heather Gerritse loaded the bases for Erin Carney with a base hit to the left side of the infield. Carney then scored Dixon with a sacrifice fly out to right field.
The Shockers advanced their lead out to 2-0 scoring one run off of two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Dixon led off the inning with a bunt single and then Hayley Temple moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Hull then singled to the left side of the field to bring Dixon across the plate.
The Rebels evened the score at 2-2 scoring two runs off of one hit and two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning. Corrine Doornberg reached on error and then scored off of a Natalie Nimmo double to the fence in right center. Kelly Nolan scored Nimmo by reaching on an error to the right side of the field.
The Shockers answered Ole Miss's runs with a run of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Hull drew a walk with two outs in the inning to start the rally for WSU. Gerritse then moved her to second with a single to the right side, and Carney picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to left field. The Shockers held onto a 3-2 lead after six innings of play.
The Rebels threatened with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but the Shockers were able to hold on to win the game 3-2.
Brittany Barnhill fell to 1-3 on the season going 7.0 innings and giving up three runs off of eight hits.
Wichita State plays its second game of the double-header against UTEP with the first pitch scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m.
