Box Score EUGENE, Ore. - Tyler Grimes' single to right centerfield
gave the Shockers a 7-6 win over No. 24 Oregon in the longest game in Shocker
history at 17 innings.
Reliever Foster Vielock earned the win. He pitched four shutout innings and allowed
just one hit with two strikeouts.
Grimes, Kevin Hall, Preston Springer, Johnny Coy and Micah Green each
had two hits, while Tyler Coughenour had three.
The Shockers scored a run in the third with the help of a
Duck error. With two outs, Kevin Hall
singled up the middle and then Preston Springer singled through the right
side. The Ducks threw to third trying to
cut down Hall, but the throw was wild and Hall was able to score to give WSU a
1-0 lead.
The Ducks answered in the bottom of the third. Andrew Mendenhall led off the inning with a
hit by pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a
wild pitch to tie the score at one. After
a walk to KC Serna and a flyout, Jack Marder hit his second home run of the
season to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.
WSU cut into the lead with a run in the fourth. Tyler Coughenour led off with a single and
came around to score on a triple to right field from Micah Green to cut the
lead to 3-2.
The Shockers went back in front with three in the
fifth. After Hall led off with an
infield single and a one-out walk to Chris O'Brien, Johnny Coy singled to right
centerfield to score Hall and the rightfielder couldn't handle it to allow Coy
to advance to second and O'Brien scored on a throwing error by the
centerfielder. Coy came around to score
on a single by Coughenour to put the Shocks in front 5-3.
Oregon cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the fifth. After back-to-back singles by Marder and
Aaron Jones, Kyle Garlick walked to load the bases. TJ McGreevy then got Shawn Peterson to ground
into a double play as a run scored.
The Shockers tacked on a run in the seventh. With two outs, Coughenour and Don Lambert
both singled to centerfield and Coughenour scored on a single up the middle
from Green to give the Shocks a 6-4 lead.
The Ducks tied it in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Jones led off with a walk and Kyle
Garlick singled. After a sac bunt moved
them both into scoring position, a two-out single from J.J. Altobelli tied the
game at six. Altobelli stole second and
after back-to-back walks, Coughenour made a diving play at third and beat the
runner to the bag to send the game to extra innings.
The Shockers finally won it in the 17th
inning. Don Lambert walked with one out
and stole second. With two outs, Walker
Davidson walked and then Tyler Grimes came up with the big two-out hit to score
Lambert to give the Shocks the 7-6 win.
The two teams wrap up the four-game series with a 3 p.m.
