CARBONDALE, Ill.- The Wichita State softball team was shutout in its first Missouri Valley Conference double-header of the year as Southern Illinois beat the Shockers, 3-0, in the second game of the double-header in Carbondale, Illinois Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State falls to 6-20 overall and 0-2 in MVC play and preseason favorite, Southern Illinois, improves to 15-9 overall and 2-0 in Valley play.
The Shockers struggled at the plate as they only picked up four hits as a team. Jamie Hull, Erin Carney, Hayley Temple, and Brittney Osborn all picked up one hit for the Shocks.
Southern Illinois was led by Haley Gorman. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.
Sloan Anderson fell to 0-4 on the season as she picked up
the loss in the circle for the Shockers.
She went 4.2 innings, while giving up three runs off of four hits.
Senior Jamie Hull got her pitching debut of the season as she stepped over from
first base to come into the game in relief for the Shocks in the bottom of the
fifth inning. Hull went 1.0 innings and only gave up one hit, while recording one strikeout.
Southern Illinois' starting pitcher, Alex Peters, improved
to 5-3 on the season as she picked up the win for the Salukis. She went 5.0
innings and the held the Shockers scoreless, while only giving up three hits.
The Salukis picked up right where they left off in the first
game of the double-header by scoring one run off of two hits in the bottom of
the first inning. Duran led things off by doubling to the outfield. Gorman picked
up the RBI as she scored Duran with a base hit single. The Salukis took a 1-0
lead after the first inning.
Southern Illinois made it a 3-0 game by scoring two runs off
of two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sydney Shelton was on third base and came home to score when Haley
Gordman doubled to the outfield and picked up the RBI. Allie Vadeboncouer then
singled to bring home Gordman, which made it a 3-0 game in favor of the Salukis
after five innings of play.
The Salukis went on to win the game, 3-0. Freshman Erin Carney led the Shockers in the double-header as she went 2-for-6 at the plate for the day.
Wichita State and Southern Illinois return to action Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. to wrap up the three game series.
Salukis Top the Shockers, 4-0, in MVC Play
CARBONDALE, Ill.- Southern Illinois' starting pitcher threw a two-hitter as the Salukis shut out the Shockers in the first game of a conference opening double-header in Carbondale, Ill. Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Erin Carney and Sophomore Danika Miller picked up the only two hits for the Shockers as they both went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Southern Illinois was lead by Chelsea Held who went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Mallory Duran went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI for the Salukis.
Danielle Glosson improved to 9-5 on the season as she went 7.0 innings, while shutting out the Shockers and only giving up two hits. She also recorded six strikeouts.
All three of the Shockers' pitchers saw action in the first game of the double-header. Katie Armagost (4-8) picked up the loss in the circle going 1.1 innings, while giving up one run off of three hits. Sloan Anderson went 3.1 innings, while giving up one run off of three hits. She also recorded three strikeouts. Brianna Smet came into the game for one inning and gave up two runs off of two hits.
Wichita State fell to 6-19 overall and 0-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play as Southern Illinois improved to 14-9 on the season and 1-0 in the MVC.
The Salukis reached the scoreboard early scoring one run off of one hit in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. SIU had the bases loaded with one out in the inning when Mallory Duran reached on a fielder's choice allowing Alicia Junker to score. Sloan Anderson got the Shockers out of the inning by striking out Morgan Barchan.
Southern scored another run off of two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Salukis. Jayna Spivey led off the inning with a double and then was moved to third base with a sacrifice bunt from Kelsea Ashton. Natalee Weissinger hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to pick up an RBI and score Spivey.
Southern Illinois' starting pitcher, Danielle Glosson, kept the Shockers' hitless through the first four innings. Freshman Erin Carney picked up WSU's first hit of the game with a double back up the middle in the top of the fifth inning. The Shocks weren't able to capitalize as Southern got out of the inning without giving up any runs.
SIU made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring two runs off of two hits. They held onto that lead and took down the Shockers, 4-0, in the first game of the double-header.
