WICHITA, Kan.- Tyler Coughenour and Ryan Hege hit their first career home runs as a Shocker as Wichita State beat #11 Arizona, 8-3, to sweep the two game series in Wichita, Kan. Wednesday afternoon.
Coughenour led the Shockers going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and one run scored. Hege went 1-for-3 with his first career home run. Chris O'Brien and Kevin Hall both had a nice day at the plate as they finished the game 2-for-3. O'Brien scored two runs and Hall scored one.
Wichita State improved to 12-4 on the season as Arizona fell to 13-5.
Charlie Lowell picked up the win for the Shockers and improved to 2-3 on the season. He went 6.0 innings and gave up three runs off of five hits. TJ McGreevy came in and picked up his first save on the season.
The Wildcats were led by Jett Bandy. He went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
The Shockers reached the scoreboard first, scoring three runs off of two hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Preston Springer led off the inning with a walk and Chris O'Brien followed that up with a single to right-field. Johnny Coy loaded the bases reaching on a fielder's choice to short. Tyler Coughenour picked up an RBI with a single to left-field that scored Springer. The Shockers scored two more runs as Zach Stucky reached on a fielder's choice to the middle of the infield. The Wildcats tried turning a double-play, but Stucky made it to first safely on the throwing error. Meanwhile, both O'Brien and Coy scored as the Shocks went ahead 3-0 at the end of the inning.
The Wildcats tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning scoring three runs off of three hits, but Ryan Hege gave the Shockers a 4-3 lead with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the inning. It was Hege's first home run of his career as a Shocker.
Wichita State doubled its score in the bottom of the seventh inning by scoring four runs. Tyler Grimes led things off with a walk and Kevin Hall followed that up with a bunt single. Springer moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Wildcats decided to load the bases as they intentionally walked O'Brien. Grimes came home to score as Coy hit a sacrifice fly out to right field. Coughenour made it an 8-3 game as he hit a three-run home run to left-center. It was also Coughenour's first career home run as a Shocker.
Wichita State held on to win 8-3.
The Shockers return to action Fri., March 18 as they begin a three game series with Penn State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.
