Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. - No. 24 Tulane (10-3) held on for a 6-2
win over Wichita State (9-3) in front of 2,351 fans at Turchin Stadium.
Preston Springer, Ryan Hege and Kevin Hall each had two hits
for the Shockers. Starter Charlie Lowell
took the loss going five innings and giving up three runs on four hits with
five walks and six strikeouts.
Tulane used two singles and a double to score two runs in
the first and take a 2-0 lead. Blake
Crohan doubled with one out in the fifth and came around to score to give the
Green Wave a 3-0 lead.
With two outs in the seventh, Chris O'Brien doubled to left
field and came around to score on a single to centerfield from Ryan Hege to cut
the lead to 3-1. Kevin Hall hit his
second home run of the season with two outs in the eighth to make the score
3-2. The Shockers then loaded the bases,
but did not score after O'Brien laced a ball to left field for the third out of
the inning.
Tulane started to pull away in the eighth inning with three
runs. With one out, four-straight
batters reached base with a walk, two singles and a hit by pitch to give the
Green Wave a 4-2 lead. After a flyout,
the Shockers committed an error to allow two more runs to score to make the
lead 6-2.
The Shockers would not go away in the ninth. With one out, Tyler Coughenour doubled down
the left field line and after walks to Dayne Parker and Micah Green, Hall hit
into a fielder's choice to score Coughenour.
After Hall advanced to second, Tyler Grimes scorched a ball down the
left field line to score Parker and Hall to pull within 6-5. Springer grounded out to the pitcher to end
the game.
The Shockers and Green Wave play game two of the series at 2
p.m. on Sat., March 12.
