Shockers Defeat Sioux, 11-4

Wichita, Kan. - Tyler Grimes was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBI to help the No. 23 Wichita State Shockers (7-0) defeat the North Dakota Fighting Sioux (0-3), 11-4 on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium. 

North Dakota scored first 1-0 in the second inning after Seath Means hit a double to score Craig Dolmage, who hit a ground rule double to lead off the inning.

The game was then delayed due to rain/lightning in the bottom of the second. 

After an hour and a half delay, play resumed with the Shockers up to bat.  Wichita State starter Tim Kelly was pulled after the delay and replaced by Grant Muncrief (1-0).  Muncrief tossed three scoreless innings and allowed one hit to earn the victory for the Shockers.  Jake Swift (0-1) allowed eight runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings to take the loss for the Sioux.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, Grimes tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with his RBI single that scored Walker Davidson.  After a base hit by Kevin Hall and a walk to Preston Springer, first baseman Johnny Coy cleared the bases with a double to right-center to make it 4-1 Shockers.  An RBI single by Erik Harbutz pushed the lead to 5-1.

Wichita State added three more runs in the bottom of fourth, 8-1 with an RBI single from Grimes, an RBI double by Springer and a sacrifice fly by Coy.

Grimes got the Shockers going again in the sixth with his leadoff double to leftfield and he scored after a double steal and throwing error by North Dakota catcher Kris Kwak to make it 9-1.

Jake Magner singled and scored on a triple by Josh Ray for North Dakota to make it 9-2 in the seventh.

The Fighting Sioux added two runs in the ninth.  Coy finished 1-for-4 for Wichita State with four RBI.

Next action for the Shockers will be at the Dallas Baptist Tournament, March 3-6.  They will play UT-Arlington on March 3 at 1:30 p.m., New Orleans on March 4 at 1:30 p.m., Dallas Baptist on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. and UT-Arlington on March 6 at 1:00 p.m.
