Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State sophomore first baseman Johnny Coy led the
Shockers with three hits and picked up two RBI in Wichita State's 8-3 win
against North Dakota Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
The No. 23 Shockers improved to 6-0 with the non-conference
baseball win on a brisk, cloudy day with temperatures in the mid-30s. Wichita
State also improved to 64-0 all-time at home in the month of February.
Starting junior pitcher Josh Smith improved to 2-0 with the
win, striking out six in 4.1 innings. Kevin Hall, a junior centerfielder, hit
an inside-the-park home run and batted in three runs total for the Shockers.
North Dakota, which competes in the Great West Conference,
fell to 0-2 on the season. Pitcher Zac Salfer was credited with the loss.
Coy singled through the right side to score Tyler Grimes in
the first inning for a 1-0 Shocker lead.
Hall's two-RBI inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the
second inning boosted the Shockers to a 3-0 lead.
Coy singled to left field, scoring Hall in the fourth inning
to go ahead by four runs.
North Dakota's Zack Trygstad tripled down the right field
line in the fifth inning, batting in Kyle Bolander and Craig Dolmage to cut the
Shockers' lead to 4-2.
Hall doubled to center field to score Don Lambert in the
fifth inning for a 5-2 lead.
Chris O'Brien doubled to center field, scoring Preston
Springer and Grimes in the eighth inning. O'Brien scored when Erik Harbutz
singled up the middle later in the inning for an 8-2 lead.
Bolander singled through the left side, scoring Josh Ray for
North Dakota's third and final run of the game.
The three-game series between the teams concludes with a 1
p.m. game Sunday at Eck Stadium.
