LUBBOCK, Texas- Northern Illinois hit a three run home run in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and beat the Shockers, 6-4, in the second day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas Saturday afternoon.
Senior first baseman Jamie Hull hit two home runs to give the Shockers a 4-3 lead over Northern Illinois heading into the seventh inning before the Huskies rallied to score three runs off of three hits to take down WSU.
Hull went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, one double, one single, four RBI, and two runs scored. The four runs batted in tied Hull's career record for RBIs in a single game. Hayley Temple also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles, one double, and two runs scored. Sophomore Sammie Shook picked up the Shockers' other two hits of the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles.
Brianna Smet got the start in the circle for Wichita State (3-10) and displayed a strong performance early. She went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs off of six hits, while picking up three strikeouts. Sloan Anderson came into the game in the fourth inning and took over from there. She threw 2.1 innings while giving up four runs off of five hits. Anderson claimed the Shockers' loss against the Huskies and fell to 0-2 on the season.
After falling behind early in both games Friday, the Shockers got to work in the bottom of the first inning and reached the scoreboard first Saturday morning. Hayley Temple doubled up the middle and then Jamie Hull hit a deep home run over the fence in left center to make the score 2-0 in favor of Wichita State after one inning of play. Hull's home run was the team's fifth of the season and third of the tournament. It was her first of the season and 17th of her career. With 17 career home runs, Hull moved into fifth all-time on the program's career home run list.
The Shockers took that momentum at the plate and carried it over to field in their defense. Northern Illinois got a runner on first base with one out, but then Hayley Temple and Sammie Shook turned a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning.
The Huskies tied the score at 2-2 scoring two runs off of four hits in the top of third inning. Dani Parrish singled to lead off the inning and then stole second base to get into scoring position. Smet struck out Germillion before Stephanie Tofft doubled up the middle to bring home Parrish. Tofft tried advancing to home on a Jennifer Barnett single up th middle, but was thrown out at home by senior Kiersten Dixon. Barnett advanced to second on the throw and scored the very next play off of a Alexander Wulbecker single up the middle.
Amanda Sheppard led off the top of the fourth inning with a double for the Huskies. A Krista Matsui bunt moved her over to third base before Smet struck out Cipollone to get the second out of the inning. Freshman Sloan Anderson came into the game in relief for the Shockers and forced Parrish to fly out to Brittney Osborn in left field to get out of the inning. The score was still tied at 2-2 after four innings of play.
Jamie Hull hit her second home run of the game to give the Shockers as 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hayley Temple led off with a single and a stolen base before Hull hit her second home run of the game to the same exact spot as the first. The home run is her second of the season and 18th on her career.
The Huskies made the score 4-3 by scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning off of two hits and one error. They scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 advantage over the Shockers and win the game in the seventh inning.
Wichita State plays its second game of the double-header against St. John's at approximately 12:00 p.m. The Shockers fell to the Red Storm, 7-5, Friday morning.
