LUBBOCK, Texas- Wichita State (3-8) dropped its second game of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic as they fell, 3-0, to Northern Illinois (1-5) Friday afternoon.
Katie Armagost got the start in the circle for the
Shockers. She went 3.2 innings, while giving up three runs off of six hits.
Freshman Sloan Anderson came into the game in relief pitching 2.1 innings, while only giving up one hit and picking up one strikeout. Armagost fell to 2-4 on the
season picking up the loss.
Kiersten Dixon led the Shockers going 2-for-3 at the
plate with one single and a double. Northern Illinois' pitcher, Morgan Bittner went 7.0 innings and only gave up three hits on the game. Senior Jamie Hull picked up the Shockers' other hit.
The Huskies were the first to score as they scored
one run off of two hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Gianna Cipollone singled before Nicole Germillion doubled to the fence in left
center field to score Cipollone.
Northern Illinois scored another run off of one hit
and one error in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 2-0. Wichita State put runners in scoring position
in the top of the fourth inning, but wasn't able to capitalize on the
opportunity. Kiersten Dixon and Jamie Hull both picked up hits in the inning,
but were left on third and second base respectively.
The Huskies scored their third consecutive run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 3-0.
The Shockers return to action for the second day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic as they take on Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Shockers Fall, 7-5, to
Red Storm
LUBBOCK, Texas- Despite scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wichita State fell, 7-5, to St. John's in the opening game of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas Friday morning.
The Shockers fell to 3-8 on the season as St. John's improved to 5-6. Senior Kat Lawrence (4-1) picked up the win for the Red Storm going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs off of four hits. Brianna Smet fell to 1-4 on the season going 6.0 innings, while giving up five runs off of five hits.
Sophomore Sammie Shook and freshman Erin Carney led the Shockers as they both hit a home run in the contest.
The Shockers displayed strong defense early in the game playing behind starting pitcher, Brianna Smet. Heather Gerritse caught Myriah Rodgers stealing in the second inning to keep the Red Storm scoreless. In the third, St. John's had runners on first and second win one out, but WSU got out of the inning as Smet struck out one and forced another to ground out to first base.
Wichita State kept the Red Storm scoreless through four innings of play as Smet held them to just two hits while picking up three strikeouts. St. John's broke through and got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fifth inning. Michelle Tilson reached on error and then moved over to second base with a sacrifice bunt. She came around and scored off of a Chelsea Durning single up the middle. In total, the Red Storm scored three runs off of two hits and three errors in the inning. They took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Sammie Shook and the Shockers answered right back as Shook hit a long home run over the fence in left center to make the score 3-1. It was her first of the season and fourth of her career.
St. John's made the score 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning as they scored four runs off of three hits and one error.
Erin Carney hit her first career home run in a Wichita State uniform in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 7-3 as she brought home Brittney Osborn. The Shockers scored four runs in the bottom of the inning off of four hits, but fell 7-5 in the end.
Wichita State plays its second game of the double-header against Northern Illinois at approximately 12:45 p.m.
