COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Wichita State (3-7) scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and beat Texas Southern (2-5) by the score of 15-13 in the final day of the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas.
Senior Kiersten Dixon led the Shockers going 3-for-4 at the plate with one double, one triple, and one home run. She scored three runs and picked up three RBI.
Six different Shockers recorded multiple hits in the game. Heather Gerritse went 3-for-4 at the plate scoring two runs and picking up two RBI. Hayley Temple, Jamie Hull, Holly Eckert, and Meghan Boston all had two hits a piece in the game.
Texas Southern made the score 1-0 in the top of the second inning with a Tenesha Skrine home run over the left field fence. Other than the Skrine home run, Smet didn't give up another hit through the first three innings and picked up five strikeouts in that time.
The Shockers went to work in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs off of three hits. Kiersten Dixon started things off with a triple to the center field fence. Dixon came home to score when Hayley Temple followed it up with a hit to the right side of the infield. Jamie Hull moved Temple over to third base with a double right back up the middle. Heather Gerritse then picked up two RBI and brought both Temple and Hull home with a double to right center. Wichita State took a 3-1 lead at the end of the third inning.
The Tigers answered right back scoring four runs off of five hits in the top of the fourth inning. WSU got one run back in the bottom of the inning off of three hits. Meghan Boston led off the inning with a single to right field and then Rachel Milnark moved her over with a hard hit to the left side of the infield. Temple then picked up the RBI when she brought Boston home with a line drive to left field. The score was 5-4 in favor of the Tigers at the end of the fourth inning.
Texas Southern made it a 9-4 game in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs off of one hit and one error. The Shockers followed that up with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Gerritse reached on a walk and then Brittney Osborn moved her over when she grounded out to the pitcher. Holly Eckert moved Gerritse to third base with a single to right center field. Gerritse then came home to score on a passed ball. Eckert scored the Shockers' second run of the inning off of an Erin Carney double up the middle.
TSU scored an additional two runs off of two hits making the score 11-6 in the sixth inning. The Shockers' answered yet again, this time taking the lead, 15-11, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the inning off of nine hits. Dixon led the inning off with a double over the center fielder's head and then Temple brought her home with a single to right center. Jamie Hull picked up an RBI scoring Temple with a double to the fence in center field. Eckert then doubled down the right field line to bring Gerritse home. Boston kept the hitting streak going, ripping a single right back up the middle to score Eckert. Boston came home on a passed ball right before Dixon hit a three run home run over the fence in left center field.
Texas Southern scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Shockers were able to hold on to the 15-13 lead and won the game.
The Shockers return to action next weekend when they take part in the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. Wichita State plays St. John's University at 10:00 a.m. on Fri., Feb. 25.
