Shockers Drop Two in Aggie Classic

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Wichita State (2-7) dropped its second game of the day to #25 Texas A&M (7-3) by the score of 16-0 in the 2011 Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M pitcher, Mel Dumezich, only gave up three hits on the game and held the Shockers scoreless. Heather Gerritse, Erin Carney, and Kiersten Dixon all had one hit for the game.

The Aggies got on the scoreboard early as Meagan May hit a home run over the fence in left center in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. By the end of the inning, A&M scored five runs on three hits to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Aggies. Three consecutive Aggies were walked before Brittany Walker singled up the middle to score a run, and then two more runs were scored off of Rhiannon Walker's double to right center.

Texas A&M made the score 13-0 in the third inning off of six hits and one error.They added three more runs in the fourth inning off of three hits.

The Aggies won the game, 16-0, in the fifth inning as the mercy rule was called.

Wichita State returns to action Sunday afternoon when they take on Texas Southern at 10:00 a.m.

Shockers Fall to Mavericks, 5-2, in Game One

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Wichita State (2-6) fell to UT-Arlington (4-4) for the second time in the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks beat the Shockers, 5-2, in the first game of the second day of the tournament.

The Shockers were led by senior Kiersten Dixon.  She went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored.  Sophomore Hayley Temple went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Temple has recorded at least one hit in every game of the Aggie Classic thus far. Sophomore Sammie Shook went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Shockers.

Freshman pitcher, Sloan Anderson, got her second career start in the circle for the Shockers. She went 3.0 innings and gave up two runs off of four hits. Both Katie Armagost and Brianna Smet made appearances in the game in relief. Armagost went 1.1 innings giving up one run off of two hits. Smet went 1.2 innings allowing two runs off of four hits. She picked up one strikeout.

The Shockers came out ready to play and put some runs on the scoreboard early in the top of the first inning. Kiersten Dixon started things off for the Shockers with a single to left field. Hayley Temple then stepped up to the plate and hit a long home run over the left field fence to make it a 2-0 game for WSU. The homer from Temple was the Shockers' first of the season and the fourth of her career. Wichita State scored two runs in the first inning off of three hits.

Wichita State loaded the bases in the second inning off of two hits from Sammie Shook and Dixon and a walk from Jamie Hull, but wasn't able to capitalize on the opportunity.

Anderson held the Mavericks scoreless for three innings before giving up a home run to Rebecca Collom in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexis Cantu singled up the middle before Armagost came into the game in relief. Pinch runner Kersti Rowan advanced to second on an illegal pitch and then over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Another illegal pitch from Armagost allowed Rowan to score and evened the score at 2-2. The Mavericks scored their two runs off of three hits.

UTA took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring one run off of one hit and one error. Courtney Zink reached by error and then scored off of a Collom double. Senior Brianna Smet came into the game in relief and was able to get the second out of the inning when Taylor Zink hit into a fielder's choice and Rachel Milnark got Charne Office out at home. The Shockers got out of the inning with another fielder's choice from Sammie Shook. The Mavericks took a 3-2 lead at the end of the fifth inning.

The Mavericks scored two more runs off of four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. They would keep that lead for the remainder of the game.
