Kan. - The No. 31 Nebraska
Cornhuskers (6-1, 0-0) defeated the No. 61 Wichita State Shockers (4-3, 1-0),
4-3 on Wednesday night.
Delia Damaschin and Carla Venticinque took the No. 3 match
8-0 over Jennifer Holmberg and Frederike Puthoff. Veronika Blaskova and Montse Blasco Fernandez
lost a close match, 8-6 to Stefanie Weinstein and Madeline Geibert. Wichita State dropped a tightly contested No. 2
match, 9-7 to give the Cornhuskers the doubles point.
"We let an opportunity to win the doubles point slip away,
which was disappointing," head coach Colin Foster said.
In singles action the Shockers and Cornhuskers split the six
matches 3-3.
"Veronika, Carla and Lutfiana each won in different ways
today but they've each consistently found ways to win this semester - it was
very good for them to get wins against a highly ranked team, unfortunately we
came up just a little short, Foster said."
"We fought hard in the singles and didn't let that doubles
point carry over into the singles which was a very good thing to see out of a
young team, but ultimately that doubles point was the difference-maker," said
Foster. "We'll bounce back and learn
from this loss as we look forward to this weekend's competition in Las Vegas."
Next action for the Shockers will be this weekend when they
travel to Las Vegas
to play in the UNLV tournament. Saturday
they will take on Denver University and on Sunday they will face the UNLV Rebels.
