Kan. - The Wichita State Shockers
(4-2, 1-0) defeated the No. 59 Oklahoma State Cowgirls (1-6, 0-0), 5-2 at the
Wichita Country Club on Sunday night.
Wichita State swept Oklahoma State
in doubles action. Delia Damaschin and
Carla Venticinque picked up the first win, 8-4 over Sarah Meghoufel and Sasha
Belova. No. 67 Raphaela Zotter and
Lutfiana Budiharto clinched the point with their 8-4 defeat over CC Sardinha
and Malika Rose.
"The doubles set the tone for the match," head coach Colin
Foster said. "We knew they would come
out fighting in the singles and we knew if we didn't maintain our high level of
focus and intensity and execution that they could come from behind."
Budiharto posted the Shocks first singles win with her
defeat of Sasha Belova, 6-1, 6-0.
Blaskova was next with her 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Sarah Meghoufel and Zotter
clinched the win for the Shockers with her victory over Sardinha, 6-1, 6-4.
"Lutfiana continues to show she is one of the best players
in the country," Foster said. "For her
to get us to 2-0 so quickly really put the pressure on Oklahoma State. Raphaela played her most complete match of
the year, Sardinha doesn't give up many easy points and you have to earn
everything against her and Raphaela did that today."
Next action for the Shockers will be this Wednesday when the
Nebraska Cornhuskers travel to Wichita. The match will be played at Sheldon Coleman
Tennis Complex and will start at 2:30 p.m.
