The Wichita State Shockers women's basketball team put forth their most
impressive effort of the season defeating the University of Northern Iowa (7-5,
0-1), 67-40. Haleigh Lankster led a trio of Shockers in double figures with 14
points. Lankster was joined by Chynna Turner and Jazimen Gordon in double
figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The game was the Missouri Valley
Conference opener for both teams.
Wichita State (7-5, 1-0) raced out to a 37-22 lead heading into
the halftime break. Lankster paced the Shockers with 12 points in the half on
five-of-six shooting from the field. Turner and Alex Harden each chipped in
with seven points, respectively. The first half was highlighted by the Shockers
defensive pressure as they forced the hometown Panthers to take several shots
deep into the thirty-second shot clock.
The second half proved to be more of the same for the
Shockers as Turner and Gordon dominated the painted area to secure the Shocker
victory. Turner finished with her third double-double of the season snaring 12
rebounds to go along with her 13 points. Gordon finished the game perfect from
the field shooting six-for-six while chipping in six rebounds.
The Shockers dominated the final stat sheet as they held the
Panthers to 34-percent shooting for the game including 30-percent in the second
half. Additionally, the Shockers out-rebounded UNI, 43-21.
The win was WSU's first in Cedar Falls since 1998.
Wichita State continues their conference opening road trip Saturday
when they visit Bradley for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
