Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. -- Wichita State fell in the first round of the
NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament to Kansas State, 3-0, Thursday at NU
Coliseum.
Kansas State won by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17 to
advance to Friday's second round against the winner of the first-round match
between No. 2 Nebraska and Jackson State.
The Shockers ended the season with a 21-11 record after
advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight season and sixth time
overall.
Senior Camri Zwiesler, the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive
Player of the Year, led the Shockers with nine kills. Senior Mary Elizabeth
Hooper posted 24 assists and senior Sarah Waldorf had 22 digs for the Shockers,
who fell to 5-5 overall in NCAA Tournament play.
Kansas State (21-10) held the Shockers to a .119 hitting
percentage, while the Wildcats posted 50 kills. Kaitlynn Pelger led the
Wildcats with 15 kills and 17 digs. Caitlyn Donahue had 46 assists for Kansas
State, which last played the Shockers in 2007.
The two teams traded the lead and ties early in the first
set before the Wildcats broke a 12-12 tie with seven-straight points to take an
18-12 lead that included three kills by Alex Muff. A service error by the
Wildcats and a block from Zwiesler put the Shockers within five, 19-14. A kill
by Sam Sanders and an Elizabeth Field block cut the score to 24-18, but a kill
by the Wildcats' Donahue ended the first set, 25-18. Zwiesler and Sanders each
led the Shockers with three kills in the first set. Kansas State's Muff recorded
six kills in the opening set.
Kansas State jumped out to take the lead in the second set.
A Field solo block, followed by a block by Field and Emily Adney later cut the
Wildcats' lead to 12-11. Kills by Field and Adney later cut the score to 14-13.
The Shockers tied the match on a Kansas State attack error and took a 17-15
lead on back-to-back kills from Field. Back-to-back kills from Kansas State's Lilla
Porubek tied the score, 17-17. The Wildcats later took a 22-20 lead on a kill
by Kathleen Ludwig and block from Pelger and Ludwig. A kill by Courtney Traxson
ended the set, which Kansas State won, 25-22. Field and Ashley Andrade each
posted three kills for the Shockers in the second set. Porubek and Pelger each
led the Wildcats with six kills in the second set.
A Zwiesler kill and block by Field and Hooper gave the
Shockers an 8-6 lead in the third set. A Pelger kill and block by Traxson gave
Kansas State the lead, 11-9. Kansas State extended its lead on three-straight
kills to grab a 14-10 edge and led the remainder of the set. Two Wildcat kills
ended the set and match with a 25-17 win.
The Shockers ended the season with 20-plus wins for the
ninth-straight season.
