Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Wichita State locked up the No. 3-seed
for the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Championship with
a 3-0 sweep of Indiana State Saturday at Indiana State Arena.
The Shockers won by scores of 28-26, 25-18 and 25-13 to wrap
up the regular season and picked up their 19th-straight win against the
Sycamores. Indiana State last beat the Shockers in 2002.
Shocker Ashley Andrade recorded a team-leading 11 kills and hit .647 without an attack error in the match. Wichita State's Elizabeth Field (hitting .625 without an attack error) and Camri Zwiesler added 10 kills each.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper posted a match-high 38 assists and Sarah Waldorf gained a match-high 19 digs as Wichita State improved to 19-9 overall and 13-5
in conference play this season.
Indiana State built an 11-7 lead early in the first set on
back-to-back kills from Shea Doran and Monique Morris. The Shockers fought back later in the
set with four-straight points. Kills from Emily Adney and Field, followed by an
Indiana State attack error and another Adney kill tied the score, 13-13. Two
consecutive Andrade kills gave the Shockers a 19-16 edge. An Indiana State service error and
attack error by Doran closed the set, giving the Shockers a 28-26 win.
The Sycamores once again jumped out to the early lead in
the second set. A five-point run gave Indiana State a 7-2 edge. An 8-1 Shocker
run gave Wichita State a 10-8 lead later in the set. Kills by Sam Sanders and
Adney, followed by a Sycamore attack error pushed the Shockers ahead, 17-12.
Three-straight Morgan Dall kills and a Morris kill once again tied the set, 18-18. But
the Shockers closed out the set with seven-straight points, including four Zwiesler
kills, for the 25-19 win.
Three consecutive Shocker points gave Wichita State an early
6-3 lead in the third set. Andey and Field kills, followed by a Sycamore attack
error pushed the Shockers ahead, 10-6. A Sanders and Andrade block gave Wichita
State a 16-8 lead. Three-straight Shocker points, including a block and kill
from Chelsey Feekin, closed out the 25-13 win in the third and final set.
The Sycamores (14-16, 6-12) entered the match holding sixth
place in the conference standings.
The Shockers next play in the MVC Volleyball Championship
quarterfinals Thursday, Nov. 24 at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The
tournament semifinals will take place Nov. 25 and championship match Nov. 26.
