WICHITA, Kan. — David Kyles led Wichita State with a
game-high 19 points and Carl Hall picked up a game-high nine rebounds as the
Shocker men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 regular season with an 85-57
win against Charleston Southern Sunday at Charles Koch Arena. | Box Score
A crowd of 10,181 watched the Shockers (1-0) shoot 53.4
percent and hold the visiting Buccaneers to 29.7 percent shooting. In addition
to Kyles, five Shockers finished with double-digit point totals: Hall (12
points), Demetric Williams (12 points), Ben Smith (10 points) and Tekele Cotton
(10 points).
Charleston Southern fell to 0-2 on the season in the
first-ever meeting between the Shockers and Buccaneers.
The Shockers jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first five
minutes of the game. Charleston Southern's lone points during the opening
stretch came on four free throws by Saah Nimley.
The Buccaneers missed their first seven shots and Wichita
State held Charleston Southern without a field goal for the first 5:43 of the
game.
With 11:31 remaining in the first half, the Buccaneers were
shooting 9.1 percent on 1-for-11 shooting, while the Shockers made 8 of their
first 13 field goal attempts (61.5 percent).
Wichita State took a 45-17 lead into halftime, led by 10
points each from Smith and Kyles. Hall led the Shockers with six first-half rebounds.
The Shockers shot 55.6 percent in the half and 58.3 percent
from three-point range. Charleston Southern finished 0-for-6 from three-point
range and shot 18.5 percent in the half overall.
Wichita State opened the second half outscoring Charleston
Southern, 10-3, to take a 35-point lead.
The Shockers later used a 9-0 run over 1:21 to take a 69-25
lead.
Eleven players scored for Wichita State in the win, which
improved the Shockers to 87-18 in home openers. The Shockers finished shooting
11-for-22 from three-point range Sunday (50 percent), but struggled from the
free-throw line, shooting 52.2 percent (12-of-23).
Before the start of Sunday's game, Wichita State unveiled
the 2011 National Invitation Tournament champions banner. The banner now hangs
in the Charles Koch Arena rafters above sections 113 and 114.
The Shockers next travel to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, playing
Colorado at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 17 on ESPNU.
