Cedar Falls, Iowa - A late surge by the Wichita State
University women's basketball team was not enough to overcome a second-half
deficit as Northern Iowa downed the Shockers 59-49 Saturday afternoon at the
McLeod Center. Wichita State finished
the game on a 10-0 run and held UNI to two points in the final 9:30.
Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with 10 points, her
seventh straight game in double figures.
Michelle Price added nine points, a block, and two steals while hitting
four of her six shots.
Wichita State raced out to a 7-2 lead behind five of
Lankster's points. Northern Iowa retaliated
with a 22-3 run that included a stretch of nearly eight minutes without a Shocker
point. Armed with a 24-10 lead, the
Panthers continued to hold the Shockers at bay until the latter part of the
second half.
A Price jumper in the lane with 2:35 remaining sparked the
10-0 run Wichita State used to close the contest but the deficit proved to be
too large to overcome.
The Shockers return home Thursday night at 7:05 against
Indiana State.
