Albuquerque,
N.M. - The Texas Tech Red Raiders
(1-0) defeated the Wichita State Shockers (0-2) 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the
New Mexico Invitational.
The Shockers started slowly dropping two of the three
doubles matches with the only victory coming from Lufiana Budiharto and
freshman Carla Venticinque, 8-5 over Haley Fournier and Elizabeth Ullathorne.
Wichita
State trailed in singles
play and even with their split of the six matches couldn't overcome the Red
Raiders lead. No. 118 Budiharto won her match
6-0, 6-3 over Ullathorne in the #1 position and Delia Damaschin and Veronika
Blaskova were victorious in the #3 and #4 positions, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-3, 2-6, 6-3
respectively.
"We came out a little slow in the singles on a few courts,
head coach Colin Foster said. "By the
time we were playing better tennis Tech was playing with more confidence."
WSU will play Sunday against UTEP in the consolation match
at 10 a.m. Complete results and recaps
will be available here following the conclusion of the invitational.
"Tomorrow we've got a great opportunity against UTEP to
continue to build and hopefully do a little better job of executing and
carrying over into the singles, Foster said."
